- Media Contact
Dr. Asia Eaton is a Professor of Psychology at Florida International University, Executive Director of Mindbridge, and Head of Research at Cyber Civil Rights Initiative. As a feminist social psychologist her research explores how gender intersects with identities such as race and sexual orientation to affect individuals’ access to and experience with power. Intersectionality theory, sexual scripting, and social role theory feature prominently in her research, along with other theories relevant to privilege and oppression. In her quantitative (e.g., experimental, longitudinal, cross-sectional), qualitative (e.g., focus groups, interviews, PhotoVoice), and mixed methods work, she aims to be persistently reflective in terms of her social location, privilege, and biases, and is deliberate about collaborating with cultural insiders on projects involving marginalized groups. Her work is also community-partnered and translational, engaging social psychological theories and methods to address real-world social problems in collaboration with local, state and national organizations and institutions.
Asia's work has funded by the NSF, Meta, the Australian Research Council, and more. Her research has been featured in outlets like the New York Times, Forbes, Science Magazine, and BBC News and resulted in invited talks at the White House, the U.N., Facebook, the Korean Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, and the U.S. Marines Corp Headquarters. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association in Divisions 1, 9, and 35, and Co-Founder of the Ph.D. track in Applied Social and Cultural Psychology at FIU. Asia received a Ph.D. and M.A. in Psychology, with a minor in Statistics, from the University of Chicago. She completed her undergraduate work at Carnegie Mellon University, receiving a B.S. in Psychology and a B.A. in Philosophy. She also recently earned a M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from FIU.
